PROS:
- AccountingDepartment.com hires accountants, bookkeepers and other financial professionals and puts them on staff.
- You work from home.
- You work a traditional 40-hour week and get benefits: including a 401(k), health insurance, and paid time off.
- You save money by not having to go into an office – no fuel costs or tolls.
- If you are hired, business is done via video and conference calls, so strong internet connection is required.
- Worker reviews on Glassdoor are largely positive about the company’s flexibility and sensitivity to work/life balance.
CONS:
- The pay is lower than with other traditional accounting jobs.
- Training is extremely detailed and workers say they live or die on following procedures carefully and monitoring their hours.
Other national accounting firms attempt to be more flexible about working remotely, at least part of the time. AccountingDepartment.com takes it several steps further.
What Users Say: (From Glassdoor)
I have been working at accountingdepartment.com full-time for more than 8 years
Pros
flexibility, able to work without being micromanaged, co-workers are some of the best and brightest in the industry, directors genuinely care about the employees and don’t ask anything they wouldn’t be willing to do, will not hesitate to “fire” a client for mistreating employees, everyone is treated fairly
Cons
very high expectations, which are sometimes difficult to maintain, and can result in stressed employees, but plenty of opportunity to learn, the virtual setting can make it easier to overwork, things are ALWAYS changing as soon as you get comfortable, but keeps you on your toes
Advice to Management
Try to be more aware of employee workloads. Everyone works at a different pace and has a different skill set which can affect the time spent on each client. You might have a client budgeted for 3 hours based on the quantity of their transactions, but the difficulty of those transactions, as well as the communication habits of the client, might cause that client to take more time to complete. Also, some employees work very quickly, while others may have to slow down and pay closer attention in order to do the same job, but are still quality, reliable employees. Maybe consider salaries for all full time employees and just ensure that they always have a full workload, whether it takes them 30 or 50 hrs/week to finish their work.

Advice to Management
Keep doing what you are doing!
Good family/life balance
“You get to work from home, on a schedule that works for you! Family is important and the company instills those values from the top down. The on-boarding process and initial employment is a little stressful because they are very particular. BUT the company does a WONDERFUL job of training its employees to be sure that they understand the expectations.”
“This is a real job. We work hard a full 40 hours a week. They are flexible when you need it, but don’t think because you are working from home it’s not a full time commitment. Working from home is a hard transition for some. You have to be self motivated and able to stay on track. You have to be comfortable with technology and with the changes that come with technology.”
“This is a virtual bookkeeper company that by far has the best written procedures of any company I’ve worked for. But if you need social interaction with other people, this is not the job for you. Very demanding and errors are not easily forgiven. They are very hard on quality, which is good but that can also be bad if you can’t keep up.”
