Threadless

What: Online community of artists and an e-commerce website; 2 ways to earn (Artist shop or design challenge)

Commissions and fees: None

Where: Nationwide

Review:

PROS:

  • 2 Ways to Earn: Artist Shop or Win a design challenge
  • Threadless designs are created by and chosen by an online community
  • Designers whose work is printed receive 20% royalties based on net profits – paid on a monthly basis AND $250 in Threadless gift cards, which can be exchanged for $200 cash
  • Each time a design is reprinted, the artist receives $500 cash
  • Artist Shop: Independent of the Threadless store. Each artist has their own shop where they control the content and the pricing. Threadless charges a base price for making each item. Allows the artist to decide how much to charge above the base price. Allows artists to sell their work, even if it’s not selected for printing through the challenge.

CONS:

  • Quality control
  • Many artists have expressed that without the $2,500 prize for winning the weekly design competition, there is not much incentive to use the site
